USS Gerald R. Ford catapult test scrubbed after electrical failure

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The new catapult system on the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier stopped working during a media demonstration Tuesday.

10 On Your Side was on the flight deck as the Navy got ready to show off the new technology in Newport News. Unfortunately, crews had electrical problems. Now they’re working to repair them.

The new electromagnetic catapults will eventually replace the steam-driven systems used.

The catapults are designed to launch planes off the flight deck with more energy, reliability, and better control.
